Brazilian midfielder Fred has today officially signed for Manchester United on a five-year deal keeping him at the club until summer 2023.

Manchester United today announced the signing of Brazilian central midfielder, Fred, for £47 million pounds. The pacey looking midfielder scored four times and assisted on seven occasions from a deep-lying central position catching the attention of many of Europe’s top clubs.

The clubs Twitter page announced the deal in another swanky new video. Originally trying to emulate the announcement video for Alexis Sanchez, United’s mascot Fred The Red can be seen playing the piano. But after a voice-over soon puts an end to the instrumental “Glory Glory Man United”  the video switches to quick cuts of the real Fred in a United shirt.

He is currently at the World Cup in Russia with Brazil but is yet to feature for them. He sat out of one of Brazil’s warm-up games due to knock. That same injury has meant he missed their opening tournament fixture against Switzerland too.

What does Fred add to Manchester United?

Fred adds to the already powerful midfield options of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and youngster Scott McTominay. The Brazilian loves to drive forward with the ball from deep but doesn’t underestimate his defensive duties. He is a classic box-to-box midfielder. Something Manchester United fans hoped Ander Herrera could provide, allowing Pogba to roam more freely.

For £47 million pounds it seems a real coup. Not many top European talents would be going for that price in today’s market. But it makes you think if he is so cheap, why did no other clubs go in for him? What is wrong with him? Have United and Jose Mourinho missed something?

Announcing the deal prior to him playing his first game of a global tournament could add more pressure to him. Now he is a Manchester United player the world will be waiting to see how he performs. In an already competitive Brazil side, Fred needs no additional pressure to convince spectators in such a short space of time. But if he comes out the other side in a positive light, the rewards could be that much sweeter.
