Season performance review: Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez made a midseason swap from Arsenal to Manchester United. The Chilean’s form came and went this season, but he still made contributions to the team.

Sanchez was a part of a transfer deal that involved Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Furthermore, Manchester United swapped the Armenian midfielder for the Arsenal winger. At the beginning of the transfer Mkhitaryan went on to play for Arsenal and manage three assists in his first appearance with Arsenal.

Sanchez’s first goal came in the form of a penalty kick. However, the Chilean’s first half season with Manchester United appeared uneventful. That all changed in the Manchester City match.

In the later fixture between Manchester United and Manchester City, Sanchez played a major role in the derby. Even though City found the lead early in the game, Sanchez became the playmaker behind a historic Manchester United comeback.

For instance, Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan put City up two within thirty minutes of the match starting. Things were looking abysmal for Manchester United; until Sanchez stepped up. In United’s first goal, Sanchez sent a chip over the City back line and found Paul Pogba. Then, Pogba found the net to pull United back within one.

Only two minutes later, Pogba found the net again pulling the two sides even. In the 69th minute, Sanchez won a free kick near the City goal. Sanchez sent a looping ball over the defense towards Chris Smalling. Smalling drove the cross home off the side of his foot. Thanks to Alexis Sanchez, an unlikely win was secured.

While Sanchez played the hero in the Manchester Derby, his form went missing in most games this season. It is quite possible that the Chilean can recover and prove all of his doubters wrong next season.

Alexis Sanchez statistics from the 2017/18 season.

With his time at Manchester United this season, Sanchez found the net twice. In previous seasons, the Chilean scored much more, but he has to learn how Mourinho wants to play the winger. On top of his two goals, he assisted 3 times.

Sanchez’s first half season with United may be a little underwhelming. Next season, there is a possibility that the winger can find his form and become a deadly force for Manchester United.

In the end, the deal with Arsenal may be a little underwhelming based upon his performance this season. Supporters have to cut him slack, though, because he was expected to make a seem-less transfer between two rival clubs. Expectations were high for the winger, and they will only get higher. Can the Chilean find his form this summer in time for the next Premier League season?
