Antonio Valencia struggled to cope with the threat of Son Heung-min and Dele Alli
Antonio Valencia’s defending capabilities have always been less desirable than his attacking and physical prowess. But when his positioning has let him down, he’s often had the speed to recover.
Yesterday, Son Heung-min was a real threat. He caused the Ecuadorian a number of problems down the left-hand side. There were a couple of occasions when Valencia got back in to recover, but four times out of six, Son got the better of him.
This is the first time in a while I have seen Valencia struggle. And the skipper was partly at fault for the goal. He failed to track the run of Dele Alli behind him and by the time he’d realised it was all too late.
