Jose Mourinho blasts his Manchester United players’ mentality after West Brom defeat
By Ollie Slack
Jose Mourinho said he “smelt” defeat ahead of the clash with West Brom on Sunday. Admitting some of his players were still on the moon celebrating the win over local rivals Manchester City the week earlier.
After the victory against Manchester City in the derby last week, many were expecting to breeze past bottom of the table West Brom. However, Jose Mourinho sensed the match against the Baggies would not be as easy some players thought it might be.
Manchester United were poor throughout the match. Only really threatening on one or two occasions. But former-red Ben Foster was up to the task of keeping those few chances out.
Jay Rodriguez opened the scoring for West Brom in the second half after Nemanja Matic headed back across is own area following a corner. United, neither before or after the goal, were too slow in their build-up to cause the Bromwich bus any concern.
"“Players didn’t want to or didn’t play simple. Everything was slow. Everyone was one more touch, one more flick, one more trick, one more turn, ball lost and no continuity or fluidity in our football.”"
Did the win over Manchester City affect the player’s mentality?
Asked whether he thought the result in last weeks Manchester Derby impacted the team, Mourinho couldn’t wait to answer.
"“I know them, I smell, I have lots of experience and that’s not me. I won eight titles and I am not on the moon because I won against Manchester City. Lots of people were on the moon because we won against Manchester City. I’ve won too much to be happy with just one big victory.”"
"“During the week I was trying to fight that because I was feeling and you could see the difference in attitudes of some players compared with other weeks. Relaxed, stylish, one more touch, one more flick, we complicated are football since the beginning."

Then the three-time Premier League manager criticised one of his players specifically. Patrick Davison of Sky Sports queried the thinking behind his substitutions and Mourinho said Paul Pogba’s game was “complicated”.
"“Paul’s game was complicated, like many others. Always one more touch, always one more turn.” Davison was intrigued as to why the Frenchman couldn’t build on his performance against City. To which Mourinho replied, “I don’t know why. Ask him!”"
