Ander Herrera is still a massively important player

Last year Ander Herrera won the Sir Matt Busby Player Of The Year award. This season the Spaniard has not been able to replicate his form, partly because of injuries disrupting his campaign. However, if anyone needed a performance to remind them of his credentials then Saturday was the match.

In the first half, Herrera was our best player. In fact, at times it seemed as though he was our only outfield player. Ander was first to every ball and if he did not win it he would hurry the City players into making mistakes. Some were beginning to think last season was just a one-off for Herrera, however, against Manchester City he proved he can do a very good job.

On Saturday, Herrera demonstrated his importance to Manchester United, not only on the pitch. When interviewed after the match, Ander spoke about his commitment to the club. A player with a strong mentality like Herrera should not be underappreciated. He is a player who doesn’t start regularly but can be brought into games to do a specific job. These types of players are as important throughout a season as starters. Ander Herrera is one of those.
