Scott McTominay made his Scotland debut over the international break but injury denied him his second cap. Will he be fit for Swansea tomorrow?
Scotland faced Costa Rica at Hampden Park in Alex McLeish’s first game of his second spell in charge of the national team. Scott McTominay was picked to play against Costa Rica, making his international debut.
McTominay had a solid first half. Breaking up play and fizzing passes forward the Manchester United youngster was a shining light in what was a poor first half for Scotland.
They eventually lost the match 1-0, however, McTominay was praised by former Manchester United and Scotland player Michael Stewart on Sportscene: “McTominay you can see he’s got composure, I think he’s somebody that will have a big future for Scotland.”
What did the manager have to say…
Alex McLeish also spoke about the fresher faces in the Scotland dressing room. He mentioned how the match was an opportunity for them to “learn” a thing or two.
“They didn’t quite have that rhythm of the guys who have been probably playing more regularly. But I know they’ll learn some good things and learn some not so good things.” [BeanymanSports]
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was at the match to watch his young product. And today in his pre-match press conference Jose said he was just, “really happy for the kid”.
“Of course much more important is his family to be there I was there representing Manchester United since it was his first cap and I’m really happy for the kid in such a small period of time to come from youth football to the first team to the Champions League to the big Premier League games and now his first cap at Scotland senior level is great for him.” [MUTV]
Jose Mourinho gives McTominay injury update
Scott missed the last match of the international break due to injury. McTominay pulled out of the squad on Monday ahead of the match but Mourinho did not mention it in today’s press conference.
In fact, Mourinho did say, “everybody is available apart from Romero and Blind”. Suggesting McTominay is available for selection despite his knock.
