Matic wonder strike seals comeback win for Manchester United against Palace

Top Reds – United’s standout performers
Juan Mata
The Spanish magician shone once again when given his opportunity. Although it was Marcus Rashford who pulled wide to allow him space, his movement and link up on the ball in those pockets was a joy to watch. Working especially well with Alexis Sanchez and Jesse Lingard. He sowed everything together on the pitch to create a proper team performance in the second half.
Chris Smalling
Once again Jose Mourinho opted for the 6’3″ defender to match up against a big target man. This time Smalling’s man was Christian Benteke. He dealt with him very well. Often having to move across to cover for Victor Lindelof when crosses came into the box, his aerial ability at both ends of the pitch is a real asset. Also, notice how Smalling received the captains armband after Valencia went off instead of the usual Paul Pogba. Mourinho also chose Smalling as ‘Man Of The Match’, showing how important the gaffer sees him to this United side.
David De Gea
Demonstrated once again why he is the best goalkeeper in the world. Despite not having many saves to make throughout the game, when called upon his concentration was faultless to brilliantly deny Benteke AND palming away from danger. Also read the crosses well in second half, claiming the ball early to start counter-attacks.
Other honourable mentions
Jesse Lingard was a willing runner throughout the match and was the only player trying to penetrate in behind the Palace defence in the first half. Still looked a threat at right-back too.
The second half performances of both Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford impressed too. Pogba had another poor display in the first half, in his ‘favoured’ left centre midfielder position too. But in the second he kept it simple and imposed himself on the game more.
And considering Rashford has looked devoid of confidence in recent weeks, he certainly looked to have his mojo back, skinning those down Palace’s left on a few occasions.
