Paul Pogba misses out on FA Cup clash
By Wyatt Miner
Paul Pogba is Mourinho’s go to in the midfield, but the young midfielder misses an important match in Manchester United’s season due to illness.
Normally, Mourinho turns to Paul Pogba to add backbone to Manchester United’s midfield. However, the Frenchman misses a huge match against a Premier League opponent in the FA Cup. In Pogba’s absence, who is to fill his shoes?
Mourinho has plenty of options just in case something prevents players from playing. Manchester United announced the starting lineup against Huddersfield. From evaluating the starting lineup, it appears as if Mourinho turned to Michael Carrick to fill the void. While he may be older, he can get the job done and more.
Michael Carrick is an accurate passer, but he lacks the physical presence that Paul Pogba has. With Pogba’s absence in the starting eleven, it is up to Matic to be the physical presence Mourinho desires. Manchester United’s midfield creates pressure on the opposition, as well as advances United’s attack. Mourinho’s midfield is what wins games for United.
If Michael Carrick fails to meet Mourinho’s expectations, he has Jesse Lingard on the bench. Lingard is in great form right now. Additionally, he has scored seven goals in league play, and he is a good backup just in case things get hairy.
How important is winning this round of the FA Cup?
Huddersfield may prove themselves to be a tough opponent, but the Red Devils are looking for silverware. With Manchester City taking a commanding lead in the Premier League, the FA Cup may be United’s only option at silverware this season. Still, Manchester United have the Champions League, but United have a long and rough road ahead in European competition. Saturday’s match against Huddersfield is a must win. It could be the difference between silverware or not.
