Manchester United started the season scoring four or more goals on opponents. In recent weeks, United have dropped large numbers of points. Consequently, there is a fifteen point difference between first and second place.

Manchester United sit in second place in the Premier League, which is great. However, Guardiola’s Manchester City sit 15 points clear of United. With the way City has played this season, it appears almost impossible that Mourinho can catch up to Pep. Furthermore, in any other season, United’s efforts could land them in first place.

However, this is not a normal year in the Premier League. Some of the world’s best managers are in the top flight of English football. Consequently, first place is more contested now, and that leaves middle and bottom table teams left to compete at a higher level. It is safe to assume that the Premier League will never be the same again.

Should United focus on the Premier League or the Champions League?

More from Red Devil Armada

Obviously, Manchester United need to focus a portion of their energy on the Premier League. At the very least, United need to finish in the top four if they want to compete in the Champions League next year.

Of course, if Manchester United finish out of the top four, but manage to win the Champions League, a top four finish would not matter. Unfortunately, silverware in the Champions League is a rare occurrence for many teams.

As of now, unless City start taking a nose dive, Manchester United will not catch City with their commanding lead. While first place is out of reach, second in the league still is not terrible.

After multiple long seasons finishing in mediocre positions, once again, second place is not all that bad. There is no question that Manchester United need to spend time and energy in the Premier League. A top four finish is the only way United can qualify for European competition next season.

The season is far from over, and there may be a chance that United can close the gap on City. As of now, it appears unlikely that this can happen, but nobody knows what can happen in the next few weeks. Supporters are left wondering what trophy United can win next because it appears United are going nowhere fast. As they say, there is always next season, right?
