Juan Mata: Manchester United midfielder is pure class on and off the pitch
Juan Mata is undoubtedly one of the most likable players in world football.
Although he hasn’t been a regular starter at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho, Juan Mata still shows up each day with a smile on his face, full of energy and ready to work.
Although the Red Devild drew 2-2 at Leicester City Saturday, the talking point of the match was the masterclass performance put on by the tiny Spaniard.
Mata scored a brace, including a marvelous free kick that tied and took the lead, respectively. And although the Foxes scored at the death to salvage a point, Mata’s performance had everyone talking.
Many pundits and fans alike thought that Mata didn’t have a future at the club after Mourinho was appointed. Jose had previously sole Mata to Manchester United when both were at Chelsea, and everyone thought history would repeat itself.
United signed Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund and everyone thought that was the final nail in the coffin for Mata’s career at Old Trafford.
But Mata, positive as always, never gave up. He supports the team even from the bench, and he’s become a fan favorite.
The player bought to replace Mata in the squad, Mkhi, could learn a thing or two from his teammate. Mata never has his head down and is always ready when called upon.
His fantastic performance against the 2015 Premier League champions showed that even at age 29, he is a capable player that provides excellent leadership and depth in the squad.
His blog that he regularly updates talks about the day to day life at the club and many of his activities that he pursues outisde of football.
Mata has a heart of gold. He cares about the downtrodden, and goes out of his way to help.
That’s why he is so beloved.
Earlier this season, Mata started the Common Goal initiative. This effort goes beyond football. Mata pledged to donate 1% of his salary to football charities around the world to make an impact on those who are less fortunate.
He is an incredible man. Extremely selfless and genuine, he’s a player that any fan can admire no matter what team you support.
He’s already had multiple players sign up to donate 1% of their salaries, and the initiative continues to grow.

Mata may not be a star like he once was, but he’s a fantastic player — and perhaps even more importantly — a fantastic human and that’s what truly matters.
