Manchester United were the reigning EFL Cup, now Carabao Cup, champions. And despite a fixture-filled schedule, the team was eager to defend its title.

But an uninspiring performance saw them get knocked out by Bristol City on Wednesday. The game was at the Robbins’ home stadium and a dramatic injury time winner by the home side decided the match with just seconds left on the clock.

Social media erupted following the loss, as the Championship side pulled off the incredible stunner. United could have easily advanced, but had multiple shots that rattled the framework.

Twitter, always fun to see overreactions was slamming Jose Mourinho’s men for their pitiful performance.

Paul Pogba received a lot of flack for the loss. He wasn’t at his best, but as long as he keeps up his Premier League form in the games that truly matter it is fine with me.

This large account is taking an easy shot. Sure, United were bad and so was Pogba. However, the 24-year old has clearly been United’s best player this season. They’ve yet to lose a game in the Premier League that he’s started since the 4-0 loss to Chelsea in 2016. Which gets us to the next tweet…

Anyone who doubts Pogba or claims he’s an issue or ‘flop’ is clueless. He’s world-class and only 24-years of age. His flair, skill, and haircuts may turn some people off. But don’t let it distract you from the his incredible, game-changing abilities.

Football is unpredictable. No one knows how each and every game will end and Tuesday proved that to a tee. Manchester United should have throttled Bristol City. They should have, but they didn’t. Upsets occur, and it is a great story for the fans and for the club. It’s only the Carabao Cup, so it’s not the end of the world by any means.

Liam Canning is a huge fan of a Manchester City-esque overhaul of the United squad. There is a lot of dead wood at the club, and it might be time to blow it up and rebuild. The league is determined for the most part this season. Although that means Mourinho can focus solely on the Champions League, it remains doubtful that United have the team capable of beating a PSG or Barcelona at the moment.

Players like Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Matteo Darmian, and others aren’t up the standards many fans have for the club.
