Manchester United utility-man Jesse Lingard has said that his club would be at the top of the Premier League “any other year.”

The midfielder who has been in fantastic form for the Red Devils was quoted saying this:

"“If we keep winning games that’s the most important thing,” said Lingard. “With the squad we have got, we have to always believe in each game. Some games we will play badly and win and sometimes we will play well and lose. I think any other season we would be top with the points we have, so as long as we keep winning we will see where we are.”"

Manchester United currently sit in second place with 41 points from 18 games played. That point haul at this time of the season typically means you’re at the top looking down — not 11 points behind the runaway title favorites.

Manchester City have won an English record 16 games in a row. Pep Guardiola has 52 points from 18 matches — another English record.

United have had a remarkably successful season — but the fact that City have been so dominant has overshadowed it. The Reds are winning — sometimes uninspiring — but they’re winning.

But after United squandered a valuable chance to make the title race competitive, it seems that the league is most likely over. The 2-1 derby loss to City was a back-breaker. The hope and energy were instantly gone — and United have played uninspiring football in the two matches since then.

Jesse Lingard is right, though. According to the BBC, Manchester United’s current point total of 41 would have them atop the Premier League in 12 of the 25 years. Not quite half, but pretty darn close.

Despite, the improbability of catching the “Noisy Neighbors,” Lingard is spot on. All United can do is go for three points in each match. And pray that Manchester City inevitably slip-up.

Jose Mourinho has United three points clear of Chelsea who sit at 38 points. This season has been successful to this point. Advancing to the Champions League group stages and sitting in second place.

It’s just a shame that the gap is 11 points. This season will be seen as a loss should the team fail to bring any new hardware to Old Trafford.
