Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has yet to sign a new contract with the Gunners, and with the January transfer window quickly approaching it doesn’t seem like the 2014 World Cup will be in London much longer.

Reports have swirled that Ozil has had an eye on a move away from the Emirates for months, and according to The Metro he could soon be playing for Manchester United.

And according to Ian Wright, it would be a brilliant pickup by Jose Mourinho.

"“Mesut Ozil to Manchester United on a free looks a shoo-in. I’m sure Jose would love to do that,” he said. “That would frighten me to death. He is a great talent and having great players around him would lift him up as well.”"

Ozil is a dynamic playmaker on his day, but his lack of effort has found him relegated to Wenger’s bench for much of this season.

Both him and Alexis Sanchez have contracts expiring come the end of the season, but it still remains unclear what the Gunners will do. They could risk continue trying to extend the players deals. However,

come January both would be eligible to negotiate free  transfers for the 2018-19 season. Wenger would hate to let both players walk for free, and could be forced to sell both for a cut-rate price come January.

It’s an interesting predicament for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. Obviously gaining an experienced, talented player like Ozil would strengthen the squad. But we covered why it might not be the best move last month.

The connection for Ozil to reunite with his former manager is obviously there. However, there are other positions on the team that need to be prioritized.

We have fullbacks who are coming to the twilight of their careers. And there are better midfield options out there — like recalling Andreas Pereira from his loan.

Ozil has the ability to be world-class. He’s a fantastic player, but he wouldn’t fit the system that Mourinho has implemented. Rumors have also swirled that both Manchester clubs may fight for Alexis Sanchez as well.
