Liverpool 0-1 Manchester United, 11 May 1996

The first memorable part of this famous final wasn’t made on the pitch but by the Liverpool players taking a pre-match walkabout the Wembley pitch.

Sir Alex Ferguson sums up why he knew United were favourites in his book Leading.

“The entire team, with the exception of the manager and the assistant, were dressed in white suits supplied by a fashion designer. For me, that signalled a breakdown in discipline. It showed that the team were distracted by a frivolous sideshow.”

The game itself was far from spectacular as games on the energy-sapping Wembley pitch can sometimes be.

The two teams cancelled each other out for the majority of the 90 minutes with extra time looking likely. However, the man, the legend, Eric Cantona had other ideas.

The hours spent on the training pitch volleying ball after ball, often supplied by academy players, into an empty net proved their worth. Cantona sent United fans around the world into hysterics as he adjusted his body to volley the ball past David James.

This victory secured United second double of League and FA Cup in three years.
