Manchester United’s Herrera has hardly started for his side but with the season just beginning, the Spaniard insists the team has to take it step by step.
Herrera, who featured in the team’s draw vs Stoke City, was a key man for Manchester United last season but it appears that Matic’s arrival at the club has complicated things for the tenacious midfielder. However, Ander was humble in his comments and called for his team do the same in their approach to the new season.

“I am always ready to play. I always say the same. I am a team player and when the manager needs me I will be there and that’s it. In football there are no surprises. We are ready but we have to respect every opponent and realise where we have come from.” said the former Atletico Bilbao man.
Herrera then continued passionately, “We are a big club and maybe the biggest in the world but we were not in the Champions League last season and we have to take it step by step. We want to fight for every title. Last season we won three which wasn’t bad for the club, but we did not fight for the Premier League and we were not in the Champions League, so we have to be humble and take it step by step.”.
The Red Devils are clearly targeting a title challenge this season and a decent run-out in the cup competitions as Mourinho aims to keep his record alive. The Manchester United boss has never failed to win the title in his second season in charge of a club and his players have started this year in fine form.
Last year there was the same positivity floating about Old Trafford but it all came crashing down as the team’s inconsistencies meant they ended in 6th place. Jose quickly realised he would have to shift his club’s focus to the Europa League in a bid to gain Champions League football and his risk eventually paid off with United set to face Basel in the first group stage game tomorrow.
Many are expecting big things of Herrera and Manchester United once more this season but the Spaniard has smartly called for patience and practicality. Fans must recognise that this is a side still in transition and will do well to get out of the group stages and put in a decent title challenge simultaneously.

If either of those things were to happen then perhaps the Red Devils will have to rely on the Spaniard, who won player of the year at the club, once more. A lot of the current crop need to experience Europe’s elite competition at a top club and if anything is to go in Manchester United’s favour, it will have to be as Ander says- step by step.
