Former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney has picked out Paul Scholes as the best player he’s ever played with in club or country level.

Manchester United have been blessed with countless legends throughout their history and Rooney has played with a fair few of them. However, the record goalscorer for England was not hesitant in claiming Scholes was head and shoulders above anyone else he’s played alongside.

More from Red Devil Armada

“He was the one player who had that game-management, and the mind which would have allowed him to go and play anywhere. He could put his boots on now and still play, I’m sure. He was that good. If we’d [England] used him a bit more in his right position he could have certainly influenced a lot more games.” said the former Red Devil.

Rooney himself is the leading goalscorer for Manchester United and rubbed shoulders with the likes of Ronaldo and Giggs to name a few but his assessment was very clear. He isn’t the only player to laud the ginger maestro as his best teammate with several footballers in awe of the man’s genius.

Scholes once retired, only to be tempted back into playing football by making a comeback in January, to win one last Premier League trophy in the following season then finally truly retired. Many United fans still hope he would somehow pull on his boots once more to Old Trafford.

Whether he’s still able to keep up or not wouldn’t matter, so long as they see one of their own wear their famous red shirt. Rooney also left Manchester United by winning a trophy but the feeling was that his career was already on a heavy decline compared to Paul leaving on a high.

The appreciation of Scholes’ talent was so worldwide that Barcelona were said to have shown videos of the midfielder controlling games in order to teach their own players how to play the game with sheer class. Of course, rather unsurprisingly, the man himself has remained quiet on any of those complimentary comments.

Ironically enough, Paul is now a television pundit for BT Sport. He temporarily had a spot in Manchester United’s staff as a youth coach and many would hope he’d return one day. Perhaps if Giggs ever returns as manager, he would bring along the rest of the famous ‘Class of 92’. It’d be tough to imagine the Neville brothers and Scholes turning that offer down!
