Expectations at Manchester United are high — scratch that — enormous. And after finishing an abysmal sixth place in his first season at the helm, Jose Mourinho has to make winning the Premier League the priority in the upcoming season.

Manchester United were expected to compete for the title last season. They did for the first month of the season. But after finishing 24 points behind eventual Premier League champions Chelsea, it was obvious the squad needed to be worked on.

Mourinho has brought in three summer signings this summer. All of which will make an immediate impact in their respective departments on the pitch.

Victor Lindelof despite a rough start to things this preseason should be a regular starter this season.

Romelu Lukaku who finished second only to Harry Kane in last season Golden Boot race will surely help fill the void left by the injured Ibrahimovic.

Nemanja Matic looks to bring experience, leadership, and help free Paul Pogba to show why he was (for the next few hours) the world’s most expensive transfer.

So with all these transfers in mind, are United title contenders for the upcoming season?

Yes.

Manchester United have addressed every area on the pitch that needed help. They have compiled a deep roster with depth at every position which is key when faced with the schedule congestion that Champions League brings to the picture.

The Red Devils were hindered by a reliance on Zlatan to score, home draws, and a lack of chance creation last season.

United’s spending suggests that they’re trying to fix all of those issues this year.

Lukaku was a huge signing for the club. He’s one of the best finishers in the Premier League and along with only being 24-years old he has his best days ahead of him.

Matic is a purchase United made to win the title. He turned 29 yesterday, but United aren’t looking to build a team around him.

Jose is looking at Matic to slot into the midfield and help bring solidarity and fluidity to a team who found themselves awkwardly trying to dismantle the opposition too often last season.

He’s played a part in helping Chelsea win the title 2 of the past three seasons — and that veteran experience is worth every bit of the £40m spent to bring the Serbian to Old Trafford.

United may not have the squad to win the Champions League — but nowadays there are only 4-5 teams even capable of winning it, and I’m not sure any reside in England — but that’s alright. The Premier League needs to be the primary target.

United last won the Premier League in 2013. This year is as good as any to try and reach the heights that was at one point expected each and every year.

With the team that’s been assembled this summer, United certainly have the capabilities of contending — and even lifting the trophy next May.
