The BBC has reported that Everton’s chairman has met with an adviser of Wayne Rooney’s to go over a potential deal. The striker has a contract with United until 2019 but may be on his way out of Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney spent most of his time on the bench this past season under Jose Mourinho. When he did play, the Englishman did not play as a number 9. He spent most of his time in the number 10 role or as an outside mid. It is clear that he doesn’t have much of a role left with Manchester United.

With the futures of Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley unknown, the Toffees could be doing some good business by getting Rooney to return to Goodison Park. Ronald Koeman is said to be interested and could get him at a low price with his recent dip in form. The United captain could be the number 9 or 10 role for Everton.

It has been rumored that Lukaku could be a part of the deal with Rooney going to Everton and Lukaku coming to Manchester. That would be a good piece of business by United. They would free up space in the wage bill and knock down the transfer fee of Lukaku. The Red Devils are in desperate need for a striker and Lukaku could be their man.

Lukaku has been pictured with Paul Pogba on vacation for the past two summers and the duo could become teammates by the end of the transfer window. Lukaku would add a much needed presence to the United lineup.

One thing is for sure and that is that Rooney’s time at United is up. The attacker has to go somewhere else, if he wants regular playing time. A return to Everton could be on the cards and may not be a bad move for United’s all-time leading goal scorer.
