The former Manchester United man insists that Rooney only has a future at the club if he can adapt to his current situation. Is there any truth to what Giggs is saying?

The Manchester United top goalscorer only started less than half of the club’s Premier League fixtures despite being captain. Giggs however, thinks that Rooney can still remain a Red Devil next season if he can adapt to different expectations.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Ryan said, “Wayne is a proven goalscorer, give him a chance Wayne will score,”. In 15 Premier League starts the Englishman scored and assisted 5 times. He also made 10 appearances from the bench in a season where Rooney saw his game time significantly decrease.

According to Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, he was out several times last season with minor, recurrent injuries but many skeptics say it was the boss’s way of slowly diminishing Wayne’s minutes without embarrassing the forward too much.

“It is whether he can put up with not being first choice or whether he can develop his game which I had to around the same age, not being certain to play every game, but playing 25-30 games and contributing.” said Welshman Ryan Giggs.

If there’s one player Rooney will want to take advice from about remaining at Manchester United for as long as possible then it must be Ryan. The light-on-his-feet winger played for the Red Devils until his early 40s and even held the roles of interim player-manager and assistant manager of the famous club.

The question is, will Rooney be ok with not being the star man and possibly giving up the captaincy next season? There’s also a question of whether he can adapt his game in the same way Giggs had to. Sir Alex Ferguson even shifted Ryan inwards into attacking midfield before dropping him deeper into central midfield territory to elongate his career.

So where does that leave Rooney? A question Mourinho must answer unless the Englishman has already told him he wishes to move. Is there space for Rooney at Manchester United? Giggs certainly thinks so, saying, “If Wayne can do that [adapt] then I don’t see why he can’t still be at the club.”.
