After Manchester United’s rather successful season, their officially confirmed new signing Victor Lindelof is keen on winning the club some more titles.
In his first interview with the club after his medical, Lindelof made it clear why he’s joined Manchester United. Despite having spent close to five years at Benfica, Victor said it was “very easy” for him to make the move and fans will be loving his enthusiasm.
Having been linked with the club since around January time, it seems that Lindelof was flattered by the interest shown in him by manager Jose Mourinho. “…to be able to work with him is a great opportunity for me.” said the Swedish international.
Although many point to the new signing’s versatility, Victor was sincere in where he thought he plays best, “…I see myself as a central defender. I feel most comfortable there.”. Lindelof’s career started as a midfielder and it reflects so in his game.
Speaking about what type of player he thinks he is, Lindelof said “I think I’m quite a calm player. I like to have the ball at my feet. I think I’m quite good with the ball and at reading the game, and I give my players in front of me quite a calmness knowing I’m back there trying to protect them as well as I can.”.
Manchester United’s first summer signing’s statement is actually backed by statistics. Compared to his new fellow teammates, Lindelof has impressively played double the forward passes of any centre-back currently at the club.
His pass completion rate however, is still unaffected by the incredible number of passes he makes. In fact, he matches Jones’ 90% completion rate despite having played 3 times the amount of forward passes. To be fair to Jones, Lindelof has played more games than the Englishman but that’s a credit to his fitness and his ability.
Now with Lindelof’s signature finally on the dotted line, Manchester United have a surplus of centre-backs it seems. Rojo, Jones, Bailly, Smalling and possibly even Blind can all be considered for that position. Despite the surplus, Victor welcomes the competition, saying “…it’s always good to have other good players around you. When you have that, you get better as well.”.

It’ll be interesting to see whether there are any outs to accommodate Lindelof at Manchester United. Who will Mourinho sell? Who does he see his new signing playing alongside of? Will it be last season’s investment, Bailly? If so, where does that leave the other centre-backs at the club? Time will tell.
