Manchester United saw their unbeaten run come to a halt as they were put to the sword by The Gunners.
Jose Mourinho made eight changes to the team which narrowly overcame Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final first leg with an eye on the second leg. After an evenly matched first half in which the two teams traded blows, Arsenal stepped up a gear in the second half and scored two goals in three minutes. Despite fielding a weakened team, United were still able to call upon the services of experienced players such as Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, and Juan Mata so the defeat left United fans feeling dejected. The manager, however, stated that he was pleased with the performance although the same could not be said about the result. Speaking for the post-match interviews to MUTV and Sky Sports, Mourinho said:
"“I am disappointed with the result but not the performance, at all. I liked very, very much the individual performances and I also liked them collectively. We lost because we didn’t score and we had great chances to score before them. They had the luck of that goal, and we didn’t score before them. Just that. Apart from that, I cannot demand more from players that didn’t play one minute of football in the last seven weeks. We didn’t deserve to lose.”"
