Number 7. Garry Birtles

A surprising transfer to most Manchester United fans, Garry Birtles came from Nottingham Forest in excellent form, but he failed to perform.

After not scoring a single goal in the 1980-81 season, where he made 28 appearances, he would go on to score 11 next season. Despite this, he was transferred back to Nottingham Forest at the end of that season.

Considering the price Manchester payed for him, they did get the bad end of the deal, as they didn’t get any money back after transferring him away.
