2. Chris Smalling

Where Blind has been under the radar as a fine performer in the defence, Smalling has earned praise from pundits and former United players for his massively improved play. Beginning in Van Gaal’s first season in charge, the 26-year-old has made drastic steps forward, perhaps owing to a new-found confidence that had previously been missing.

This season, Smalling stepped forward as the defensive general. To account for Blind’s weaknesses in aerial duels, the bigger defender would match up with the opposing striker on set pieces and crosses. When his partner was caught out of position, the 26-year-old was able to recover well. His reading of the game also made him one of the best interceptors of passes on the team.

He still looks somewhat uncomfortable when he finds himself in the opposition’s half with the ball at his feet, but he’s miles ahead of past seasons. The next manager will surely build the defence around Smalling, and if he can continue his development he could become one of the world’s best.
