Manchester United: Carrick Wrongly Blames Martial for Loss
Manchester United midfielder says his team should have capitalized on their chances.
Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by Tottenham on Sunday, with Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, and Erik Lamela goals sending the Reds home in embarrassment.
What could have been a hugely important victory or draw to keep pace with the other top four contenders turned into a nightmare in the span of a few minutes. After Timothy Fosu-Mensah was taken off due to injury just before the 70th minute, the Manchester United back four fell to pieces.
It’s easy to say that the defense just had a string of bad luck, but Matteo Darmian did nothing to contribute once he came on. He was arguably responsible for two of the three goals, while Marcos Rojo was responsible for the other. Louis van Gaal refused to concede that Fosu-Mensah’s removal made a difference, but it was clear that the 18-year-old was acting as defensive savior for the entire match.
The midfield and attackers obviously failed to make life difficult for Tottenham as United never looked like threatening with a goal. Juan Mata and Fosu-Mensah had decent combination plays on the right hand side, while Anthony Martial struggled with a lack of support from Rojo.

After the match, in perhaps his most infuriating quote yet, Michael Carrick pinned the result on Martial and missed chances. Speaking to MUTV, he said:
"“Anthony had a decent chance and when you come away from home in a game like that, you need to take the chances you get. Unfortunately we didn’t do that today and we have paid the price.”“I am not even sure how long there was left to play but they scored three goals and they obviously had their tails up after that. It was too late, the game was done. Up until then I thought we did alright and we were well in the game. They are a dangerous team and they have got threats across the front line and we had to defend well at times.”"

Carrick, the 34-year-old midfielder who has had a torrid season and contributed hardly anything to matches, had the audacity to blame the loss on Manchester United’s best outfield player. The holding midfielder offered no help as an extra defender in front of the back, nor did he spur any attacks with his incisive passing.
United didn’t lose because they missed their chances, they lost because the didn’t make chances and couldn’t defend once the Dutch youth was taken off. The Red Devils managed a measly one shot on target and only five shots in total. Even if Martial had scored his one chance, Carrick’s team only would have succeeded in preventing a Spurs clean sheet.
If there was any single area where the game may have been lost, it was either on the flanks of the defense or the center of the midfield. The English international needs to realize he is part of the problem; it’s a mystery as to why Van Gaal is still even selecting Carrick, though less of a mystery than why Ashley Young was playing striker.

The vice-captain finished his discussion with his usual emphasis on moving on from the match to the next big game, taking what they can from the loss. Maybe the biggest takeaway is that Carrick has become as delusional as his manager.
