3. Marcos Rojo, Defender
The Argentine was signed to great surprise in the summer of 2014. Van Gaal said he was impressed by the former Sporting Club de Portugal player when he scouted Argentina in his time as the Netherlands manager.
Rojo joined United and has since flitted between centre-back and left-back. That versatility has proven to be useful on many occasions, but it has also prevented him from nailing down a regular spot in the starting XI.
Now, with Chris Smalling, Daley Blind and Phil Jones favoured in central defence, and Luke Shaw and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson better options at left-back, Rojo finds himself as a second-choice player.
He has also struggled to maintain his fitness to the point that United can’t rely on the 26-year-old.
Rojo is a handy squad player, but given that’s all he’s ever likely to be, it wouldn’t be surprising to see United cash in and sell him in the summer.
