3. Manchester United 0-1 West Bromwich Albion

This game ended with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Mata and Fellaini all on the pitch – and United still couldn’t beat West Brom, or even score.

What was so, so odd about the match was that Rooney and Van Persie played the final stages of the game in attacking midfield, with Fellaini up front.

Granted, it wasn’t Van Gaal’s fault that Van Persie missed a penalty or that United missed some good chances to score, but to play two of the Premier League’s most potent forwards of all time in midfield was quite something.

Van Gaal, who has a won one, lost two record against Tony Pulis – a sackable offence in itself for a United manager – ran out of ideas and ended up throwing all of his attacking players onto the pitch at the same time, hoping for something to happen.
