When Manchester United boosted their squad in the summer, one position that most felt was covered was full-back. The signing of Matteo Darmian from Torino meant that Louis van Gaal had two viable options at right-back, three viable options at left-back plus his multi-functional players too.
Despite this, Matteo Darmian has struggled after an initially excellent start and Antonio Valencia has been ruled out for several months with a ‘heavy’ foot injury. Add to that Luke Shaw’s broken leg and Daley Blind’s form in central defence, van Gaal is suddenly down to the bare bones in those positions.
