Manchester United endured a frustrating stalemate against their noisy neighbours at Old Trafford on Sunday as Manchester City’s defensive tactics worked against the Red Devils.

An extremely uneventful Manchester Derby turned out to be a drab day for both sets of supporters, with clear-cut chances at a premium and the general play surprisingly non-entertaining. Jesse Lingard and Chris Smalling came closest to breaking the deadlock for the Reds with Joe Hart performing admirably to keep out the latter’s shot.

Below are the Player Ratings for a largely forgettable Manchester Derby:

Starting Eleven:

The Spaniard had next to nothing to do throughout the entire ninety minutes with City looking for a point. Probably his quietest Manchester Derby since he got in between the sticks for United. GK. Manchester United. DAVID DE GEA. 6.0

6.5. Got the nod over Darmian presumably to add pace to United’s attack but his crossing was hit and miss. Nevertheless, constantly got the better of Kolarov and looked to attack City at every opportunity. Must improve his final delivery though.. RB. Manchester United. ANTONIO VALENCIA

6.5. Looked a tad shaky in the beginning stages but the Englishman grew into the game and more than dealt with the physical threat of Bony. Read the game well to snuff out a few attacks from City and is gradually forming a strong partnership with Smalling at the back. . CB. Manchester United. PHIL JONES

Continues to be a rock at the back for United with another dominant display. Kept Bony quiet and led United’s defence in an impressive manner. Easily the Reds standout player of the season so far.. CB. Manchester United. CHRIS SMALLING. 7.5

MARCOS ROJO. 7.0. After his horror show in Moscow, Rojo bounced back impressively to put in a solid showing on the left hand side of defence. Was typically robust in the tackle and had De Bruyne in his pocket. After the break, dealt with the pacy threat of Navas admirably.. LB. Manchester United

Manchester United. MORGAN SCHNEIDERLIN. 7.0. Continues to impress in the engine room and made some key interceptions to snuff out several City attacks. Won possession frequently and looks the part of a United anchorman.. CM

The German dominated midfield and controlled proceedings from start till his time on the pitch for the Reds. Wasn’t perturbed by the occasion and dictated play while also making some intelligent runs from deep. Imperious performance.. CM. Manchester United. BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER. 7.5

Manchester United. JUAN MATA. 6.0. Unlike last year’s fixture, the diminutive playmaker had little impact on the game. With City looking to defend, there was close to no space for him to thrive in and was effectively marked out of the contest. Booked for a clumsy challenge on Fernandinho before being brought off for Lingard.. RM

Manchester United. ANDER HERRERA. 6.5. The Spaniard energetically buzzed around the pitch looking to increase the tempo and create a breakthrough for United, but to no avail. Similar to his compatriot he was unable to find open spaces in a rather tightly contested affair.. CAM

Easily the most dangerous player on the pitch for the Reds and gave Bacary Sagna plenty to think about every time he got the ball. Again confined to a wide role, which would have delighted Manuel Pellegrini. Played a sublime ball over the City defence to Jesse Lingard which nearly snatched all three points for United. Must be moved centrally with his pace and trickery wasted on the wings.. LM. Manchester United. ANTHONY MARTIAL. 7.0

Manchester United. WAYNE ROONEY. 5.5. Toiled again in front of goal and showed no signs of improving his fortunes as a lone striker in Van Gaal’s system. Can’t blame his work-rate but offers barely any attacking threat on the ball and an even less of a presence upfront. Van Gaal must reassess his captain’s role in the team who is proving more and more ineffective upfront.. ST

Substitutes:

6.0. Replaced Schweinsteiger in the 71st minute and immediately got about hassling the City players in their half. Provided an aerial target for United to launch balls at into the City box and proved to be a nuisance during his time on the pitch.. CM. Manchester United. MAROUANE FELLAINI

JESSE LINGARD. 6.5. Came on for the ineffective Mata and nearly grabbed the winner for United with a well-taken volley only to be unfortunately denied by the bar. Lively cameo from the youngster with some direct running and intelligent positioning.. RM. Manchester United

6.0. Brought on to replace for the injured Valencia in order to provide a fresh pair of legs down the right. Not much time to have an impact but looked assured whenever City countered in the closing stages.. RB. Manchester United. MATTEO DARMIAN
