Perhaps this was one of those moments which really cemented Rafael’s status as a cult hero at Old Trafford. United were trailing Liverpool at Anfield and they needed an equalizer desperately.
Antonio Valencia’s cross from the right flank was handled smarlty by Shinji Kagawa who chested the ball down which was eventually picked up by Rafael. The Brazilian launched an awe-inspiring left-footed volley past Pepe Reina to bring United back on level terms in the 51st minute. They won the game 1-2, courtesy of a Robin van Persie penalty.
