It turned out to be a busy summer at Manchester United, but it is now September and the transfer window is closed until January.

The window was the most expensive in the history of British football and United were among the biggest spenders as Louis van Gaal looks to mount a successful campaign this year in all competitions.

Transfer strategy under Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward is very different from the era of Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill, this window in particular came in for a lost of criticism in regards to Manchester United’s transfer strategy, or as some argued – lack of it.

The Manchester United transfer business lasted right up until deadline day with plenty of drama and rumours throughout the summer. Big names left, big names signed. Big names did not sign. Ramos, Hummels, Pedro and Otamendi were among the most touted transfer targets who did not end up as Manchester United players for various reasons one way or another.

So, with lots of comings and goings at Old Trafford here is a helpful recap of who was signed and who was sold. Prices are the most reported estimates due to most deals being undisclosed.

IN:

#7. Depay was the first signing Manchester United made in the summer. Memphis has impressed so far in the Champions League where he hit a brace against Club Brugge. Still work in progress, especially with his still sub-par league performances.. MID. PSV, £24 million. MEMPHIS DEPAY

Darmian has been compared to United legend Gary Neville, something Neville himself has agreed with. The Italian has arguably been the best of United’s signings this summer but was also one of the lowest-profile signings being a relative unknown outside Italy.. DEF. Torino, £13 million. MATTEO DARMIAN. #36

BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER. #31. The German World Cup winner joined from Bayern Munich to make the midfield even more talented. While he has been facing some fitness issues, the determination and quality to succeed is all there.. MID. Bayern Munich, £6 million

Signed from Southampton after a long association with the Saints lasting back to League 1, the Frenchman has so far been in total control of the Manchester United midfield. A quality addition.. MID. Southampton, £24 million. MORGAN SCHNEIDERLIN. #28

GK. Free Agent. SERGIO ROMERO. #20. The Argentine goalkeeper was picked up after being released by Sampdoria. He has shown signs of his ability but struggled against Swansea. Was not expecting David De Gea to stick around so faces an uncertain future as the starting goalkeeper. Watch this space.

FWD. AS Monaco, £36 million. ANTHONY MARTIAL. #9. Drawing comparisons to Thierry Henry, French teenager Martial was under the radar of most clubs but is very talented nonetheless. He takes the number nine shirt vacated by Radamel Falcao. The biggest shock of the window for sure with his hefty price-tag that divided opinion.

REGAN POOLE. ?. A promising young Welsh international who was a product of the Cardiff academy but was released and signed for Newport County. He became their youngest ever player and had a trial at United last year, as well as at Liverpool in March. One for the future rather than right now.. DEF. Newport County, £100k

It wasn’t just about bringing players in though. There were a number of departures too from Manchester United and there were more than a few high-profile names who had packed their bags. Here is a look at some selected transfers out, which includes loan deals.

OUT:

He spent last season on loan at Aston Villa but moved to Everton as soon as the window opened. He did however suffer a bad injury when Everton drew with Spurs at the weekend and will be out for a while after being stretchered off.. MID. Everton, Free. TOM CLEVERLEY.

Fenerbahce, £5 million. ROBIN VAN PERSIE. . The Dutch captain fell out with Louis van Gaal and was told he no longer had a future at Old Trafford. He subsequently joined Turkish giants Fenerbahce where he received a heroes welcome as thousands of fans turned out to see him sign. His departure also sparked the start of United’s well documented striker issues.. FWD

. Before Robin van Persie signed, Nani was in Turkey first having spent the previous season on loan at his first club, Sporting Lisbon in his native Portugal. Unlike van Persie, most United fans did not mind seeing Nani leave. Seems to be enjoying his football for his new club.. MID. Fenerbache. LUIS NANI

ANGEL DI MARIA. . After just one season in Manchester, club-record signing Angel Di Maria moved to PSG. He did not quite have the impact many expected him to have in the Premier League and faced a lot of off-field issues too making a transfer almost inevitable when the window opened. United won’t be too happy to have mad such a loss on their big investment and so soon as well.. MID. PSG, £46 million

DEF. Lyon, Undisclosed. RAFAEL DA SILVA. . The loveable Brazilian was another player who did not get along with Louis van Gaal, and therefore signed with Ligue 1 side Lyon in France. He has had a solide start to his career there and won the adoration of fans already. He remains a Manchester United fan, tweeting he would definitely be watching the Swansea game and presumably plenty more games this season too.

Bayer Leverkusen, £7.3 million. JAVIER HERNANDEZ. . Deemed surplus to requirements at Manchester United despite their lack of strikers, Mexican forward Javier Hernandez left the club after five tears. He joins Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen who are also in this years Champions League. Stated he was not particularly liked by Louis van Gaal.. FWD

MID. Borussia Dortmund, Season-Long Loan. ADNAN JANUZAJ. . Despite scoring the only goal against Aston Villa, Jauzaj has been sent on loan for the season to Borussia Dortmund. After having a breakout season under David Moyes, Januzaj has struggled to replicate that under Louis van Gaal. This season could prove decisive in his long-term future.

Manchester United take on Liverpool when the Premier League returns after the international break. No doubt Anthony Martial will be involved in that one. Also around for the Liverpool game could be David De Gea after his proposed move to Real Madrid fell through.
