United dominated possesion and created numerous chances througout the game but they just lacked the cutting edge.Despite this loss United will remain third in the league though the point gap with City will be reduced to one should their rivals beat West Ham on Sunday.

David De Gea (6/10)

The Spaniard was lucky not to be penalised in the first half for handling the ball outside the box. He dealt well with the aerial threat which Chelsea possessed during the set pieces and overall didn’t have much to do.

Luke Shaw (8/10)

Probably the best game for the teenager. He regularly bombed forward and created chances. Defensively he was solid, rarely committing any errors. He could have easily bagged assists when he squared it up for Rooney and Mata in two respective halves but both players couldn’t take their chance. Overall a promising outing for the England international after a long injury lay-off.

Paddy McNair (7/10)

The academy graduate slotted in well in the absence of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, nullifying the effect of Didier Drogba along with Chris Smalling. The defender was not afraid of getting forward at times, with a long range effort forcing Courtois to make a good save. A promising display from young Paddy.

Chris Smalling (6/10)

The in-form defender had a quiet evening against the Blues. He completely lost Eden Hazard in the build up of the goal after a lovely touch took the winger past him but apart from that he was able to manage to keep Drogba quiet. His distribution from the back was also impressive.

Antonio Valencia (6/10)

The Ecuadorian always offered himself while going forward but was not able to put in any crosses into the box. He was caught out of position for Chelsea’s goal due to Hazard’s incredible pace but there wasn’t much he could do.

Ander Herrera ( 7/10)

Fared well in an unusual position. He started at the base of the midfield three and Completed the most number of passes on the pitch, making important interceptions along the way. Almost handed Chelsea a second goal with a misplaced pass in the second half which led to Hazard hitting the post and he was booked ar the end of the match for diving as he tried to win a penalty for his side. Another promising performance by the Spaniard.

Wayne Rooney (7/10)

The captain was forced to slot in the midfield due to injuries to Michael Carrick and Daley Blind. The Englishman didn’t dissapoint as he hardly did anything wrong. His distribution of the ball along the entire field was good and he worked his socks off. He came close to scoring early in first half but he saw his effort curl just wide.

Maraoune Fellaini (5/10)

The Belgian had his one of the most ineffective game in recent time.He was completely isolated by Kurt Zouma, who shadowed him throughout the game. His link up play at the left was disappointing as Chelsea completely nullified his physical presence in the game.

Ashley Young (5/10)

After an impressive derby performance, the winger was not able to repeat it in this match. He tracked back well and helped Shaw while defending. But in the final third he was not able to put crosses into the box or create any genuine chances. He was eventually replaced by Angel Di Maria in the second half.

Juan Mata (6/10)

The Spaniard didn’t have his best of the games on the right wing. He was not able to have that linkup play with Herrera as the latter was sitting deep.He came close to scoring when he blasted the ball over when it was squared by Shaw but overall struggled before he was replaced by Adnan Januzaj.

Radamel Falcao (6/10)

The Colombian had a disappointing game as he was not able to score. His movement was impressive though his teammates were not able to find him. He lost the ball on the half-way line which led to Hazard’s goal but it should have been a foul. Hit the post and had a goal bound effort blocked by Cahill. Just one of those days for Falcao.

Substitutes

Angel Di Maria (6/10)

Made some good runs and played some crisp passes but failed to make any real impact on the game.

Adnan Januzaj (5/10)

He slotted in well at the right side and his link up play with Valencia was good but hardly created anything which would bring United level.

Tyler Blackett (5/10)

He replaced Shaw late in the game but looked vulnerable.
