Two wonderful goals from Juan Mata were enough to secure all three points, despite Daniel Sturridge’s consolation and Wayne Rooney’s missed penalty in injury time of the second half. The big headline however, was Steven Gerrard’s red card after just 42 seconds on the pitch.

The Liverpool captain, famed in recent memory for his glorious slip against Chelsea last season which essentially cost the Kop side their elusive 19th league title, was brought on at half-time in place of the injured Adam Lallana and was visibly fired up after being taunted by the United fans for much of the first half.

Gerrard was forced to warm-up along the touchline heading towards the Manchester United fans during the first 45 minutes and was clearly shaken by the taunts and songs directed at him by the travelling fans. Stevie G was seen giving the United fans the ‘five finger salute’, something Liverpool fans and players are accustomed to doing which represents the five European Cups won by the club.
However, when entering the field United fans began to sing the now infamous song about Gerrard’s slip, as well as their own version of Liverpool’s ‘Now You’re Gonna Believe Us’ song. Within 40 seconds of comically taking the armband off vice-captain Jordan Henderson, Gerrard tried to rouse the crowd with a strong, but fair, tackle on Juan Mata before he lost it completely and stood on Ander Herrera’s ankle following a tackle from the Spaniard.
Gerrard was given his marching orders and United fans went into full party-mode. Mata scored a stunning scissors kick shortly after and United held on for the three points and victory at Anfield.
Following the game Man Utd fans were held back by stewards, as is normal, but someone was brave enough to get a video camera out and film the joyous scenes so close to the Liverpool crowd. With the home crowd quickly leaving the stadium, the visitors took control of Anfield and belted out their version of ‘Now You’re Gonna Believe Us’ in full voice, making for a fantastic scene.
