Why Manchester United don’t need Paul Pogba

“United should never have let Pogba go”
It’s a quote I’ve heard a lot and definitely seem to be hearing it more and more recently, with speculation he could be on the way out of Juventus and heading back to the Premier League. He could return to Old Trafford if he does not opt for Chelsea or Man City according to reports while Real Madrid are also likely to be interested. Allowing the French midfielder to leave the club in the first place is apparently the biggest mistake United have ever made.

Those who believe this is the case must obviously forget the signing of Eric Djemba-Djemba or even Kleberson; who was the ‘other’ player signed alongside the now legendary Cristiano Ronaldo as big mistakes made by the club. It was a decision made by Sir Alex Ferguson and cannot be called a ‘mistake’.
Too Big For His Boots?
He left the club because he wanted too much. He was young, greedy and disrespectful. But still talented. Hence Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to show him the door. No one should be bigger than the club. Regardless of how good you are or what your age is – the club always comes first, and this should be the case for all footballers across the world.
“It is disappointing. I don’t think he showed us any respect at all, to be honest. I’m quite happy that if they [footballers] carry on that way, they’re probably better doing it away from us.” – Sir Alex Ferguson
While this view of disrespecting the club may be disputed, in terms of technical ability yes he is unquestionably good but not the player United need right now. Also, it is worth taking into consideration the stupidly high price he would be quoted at. It could be upwards of £60 million making him more expensive than Di Maria.
He isn’t the player United need right now, the midfield is packed enough as it is and despite his talent it would not be good for the dressing room I feel with his somewhat bad boy image from his last stay at Old Trafford.
Not The United Way
If he is bought back, what would that say about the academy? It is clearly not good enough now then, if players like this are let go, and then bought back at inflated sums because the club do not feel the academy prospects are good enough. Could the same happen to the current crop of youngsters? We could be talking about Januzaj in a few years time coming back to United for a mammoth sum if he had to leave.
United are going to be paying more and more in transfer fees thanks to the precedent set by the club in the £60 million deal for Di Maria and splashing out £28 million for Marouane Fellaini who despite some recent improvements, does not justify such a sum.
It just isn’t how United should be conducting business. Now for every player they sign, they will continue to overpay. Signing Pogba will continue this worrying trend.
Just A Name?
His name has become somewhat of a buzzword if you will. It is being treated like Messi and Ronaldo, the mere mention of the word sends people into a detailed description of the players ability and disbelief at United’s decision to let him go. We have no way of telling if he will be the great player he is touted to be or whether these early flashes of brilliance will run out and his career will not reach the heights he is expected to, being another player who peaked too soon.
It makes me wonder how much people really know about him, both on the pitch and off the pitch. Perhaps the time at Juventus has matured him and he is ready to rejoin United. But I don’t think he deserves to, not at this point in time. Maybe in a few years when he has truly shown he is worthy.
It is up to van Gaal if he wishes to give him another chance, because after all it was the decision of Sir Alex to move him on. Maybe it will be Ferguson’s biggest mistake. Or perhaps his boldest move.
Whatever the case all we can do it watch the story continue to unfold. I just hope it has the right ending.
