After a dismal season, United’s squad was in need of a major overhaul. And boy did it get one.
After Louis Van Gaal’s appointment prior to the World Cup, rumours were rife that the Dutch coach would fill the side with Dutch nationals and multi-million pound signings to ensure Champions League football would return at the earlier possible opportunity.
The boss didn’t disappoint either, spending a massive £150 million and breaking the British transfer record.
United signed Angel Di Maria (£59.7 million), Luke Shaw (£27 million), Ander Herrera (£28 million), Daley Blind (£14 million) and Marcos Rojo (£16 million + Nani on loan) before a shock deadline day swoop secured the signing of fearsome Colombian striker Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan, with the option to buy at £43 million if he impressed.
Add to that the departures of first team figures Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Alex Buttner, Shinji Kagawa, Ryan Giggs, Tom Cleverley, Nani, Wilfried Zaha, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck, Manchester United had a completely new look and feel about it ahead of the 2014/15 Premier League season.
