Mats Hummels was “too slow” for David Moyes

Former Manchester United manager David Moyes decided not to pursue an interest in defender Mats Hummels because he was “too slow” according to Daniel Taylor.

Taylor, a well respected journalist for The Guardian, is known for having close links to the Old Trafford side and was speaking on Manchester United’s in-house TV channel MUTV during their “United in Press” programme.

According to Taylor, David Moyes was a big fan of German international Hummels but after close scouting decided not to move for him as he was “too slow for the Premier League”. Moyes ended up deciding to stick with what he had in a central defensive position, signing nobody.

Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail also appeared on the show and revealed that Manchester United were interested in another center-back last season.

Ladyman said that Manchester United spent a long time pondering over a possible move for French center-back Eliaquim Mangala, who eventually joined Manchester City for £32M from Porto. According to the Daily Mail writer, after extensive scouting of the 23 year-old United’s hierarchy decided he “wasn’t quite good enough”.

Louis Van Gaal reportedly chased Mats Hummels during all of last summer but was told by Borussia Dortmund that he would not be sold at any price. Van Gaal eventually signed Marcos Rojo but the Dutch manager maintains a strong interest in the World Cup winner. There has been talk that Hummels could be a January target for Manchester United following this seasons injury problems, however it is highly unlikely that Dortmund would agree to a sale midway through their campaign while still battling in Europe after their rocky start in the Bundesliga.

Mangala’s City career has been shaky so far but the Frenchman was in excellent form during their 3-2 win over Bayern Munich in midweek.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a January move for Dutch defender Ron Vlaar but the expectation is they will go back in for Mats Hummels should they secure Champions League football for next season.
