Despite it being an extremely disappointing game for the Red Devils, we need to determine a man of the match. Sadly, the obvious choice is Manchester City’s star striker, Sergio Aguero.
Aguero scored two goals for City and came close on numerous occasions to getting a hattrick. Aguero’s first goal came in the 16th minute on a volley that put City up by one. This was a huge turning point in the game. Then at the beginning of the second half Aguero would bury United by scoring a very similar goal to the one he scored earlier in the game, making the score now 3-0 to City.
Although you could have easily given this award to someone like Yaya Toure or Joe Hart, Aguero did stand out and was the best player in this game.
As for United’s player of the game, the choice is easily Wayne Rooney. Wayne seemed to be the only Man U player that actually showed up and played an all-around good game which included a late-freekick goal. I don’t want to jump to any conclusions so early in the season, but it does seem like Rooney has a positive attitude and that all the transfer rumblings are behind him. At least for the time being. With all of the talk focused on how much United would miss Van Persie, which the did, it was nice to see how Rooney stepped up rather than crumble, much like his team did during the 1st half.
As I mentioned in the recap of the game, all United can do now is move on and stop dwelling on this game. Sure, you can look at your mistakes and try to improve upon them, but don’t get fixated on how devastating of a loss this was. Time to focus on Liverpool and West Brom, our next two opponents.
Go United!
