Manchester United have confirmed that new signing Rasmus Højlund is a ‘few weeks’ away from returning to training, according the club’s website.

The 20 year old striker recently completed a move from Italian side Atalanta for £72million, and was unveiled at half-time in last weekend’s pre-season friendly win against French side RC Lens at Old Trafford.

An excerpt from the club’s interview with Rasmus Højlund said:

"“While the striker’s excitement is high, it’s likely to be a few weeks before we see him with his boots on, due to a small issue he sustained in pre-season with his former club.Rasmus’s recovery is progressing well however, and we already know he’ll be itching to get out there as soon as possible.”"

The Red Devils kick off their Premier League campaign next Monday against Wolves but the rousing reception for United’s frontman will not be replicated for a little while yet.

Most fans will have anticipated him to be ready to don the United colours as soon as possible, but it was revealed that the teenager sustained a minor issue in pre-season for Atalanta, which will keep him out of action for the opening weeks of the season.

United will go into the season opener without a traditional number 9 available. Wout Weghorst is now gone after United decided not to buy him. Anthony Martial has not featured in pre-season due to an injury sustained last season which has kept him out for a few months, so Jadon Sancho has been deployed as a false nine in the US tour. We could expect Sancho to fill that gap as he has relatively impressed in that role for Ten Hag’s side. Marcus Rashford is preferably the go-to option to temporarily fill in as a striker whilst Højlund recovers in order to make his anticipated debut hopefully in a few weeks time.
