Manchester United are keen on securing a midfielder this summer with the lack of depth in the squad making life difficult for manager Erik ten Hag. The long-term injuries to Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek forced the Premier League giants to sign Marcel Sabitzer on a loan from Bayern Munich in the winter transfer window.

While the loanee is yet to settle in at Old Trafford, Ten Hag has made it clear that the Brazilian pairing of Casemiro and Fred is his preferred choice with captain Bruno Fernandes playing as the attacking midfielder.

With just Sabitzer and Scott McTominay as options on the bench, the Dutch boss is struggling to keep his players fit for all three tournaments that the English side are still competing in, Premier League, FA Cup, and Europa League.

With the likelihood of new owners potentially bringing in massive transfer funds in order to win the fans over, Ten Hag has named Barcelona‘s Frenkie de Jong and Borussia Dortmund‘s Jude Bellingham as his top summer targets to bolster his midfield, but these two superstars are not the only names on his list.

Manchester United enter race to sign Chelsea midfielder

The Guardian reports that the Manchester side have placed Chelsea star Mason Mount as their target for an attacking midfielder. While both United and the Blues are targeting De Jong and Bellingham, the Red Devils are considering an alternative in Mount. The 24-year-old’s current contract at Stamford Bridge expires in June 2024 and with renewal talks hitting a brick wall, the midfielder could be available for £50 million this summer. Ten Hag is ready to join Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the race for the talented Englishman.
