Manchester United defender Raphael Varane was understandably inconsolable when he had to come off injured during Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea. With the FIFA World Cup less than a month away, the Frenchman’s chances of making it to Qatar seemed slim. However, recent reports on his health seem to indicate that his injury is not as serious as first anticipated.

Varane came off in the 60th minute after attempting to stop an attack from Chelsea. The former Real Madrid star immediately took to the ground and did not move. He was later visibly upset, fearing that he would not make it in time for the world cup starting November 20.

Recent reports, however, suggest that the four-time UEFA Champions League winner’s stint on the sidelines could be shorter than expected. As per L’Equipe (via Metro), Varane could be out for three to four weeks following the injury. It has also been reported that the defender suffered a hamstring injury which could rule him out of the first game of France’s World Cup campaign.

France is slated to face Australia in the first game of the tournament on November 22. He will also miss six games for United before club football goes on hiatus for the world cup.

Raphael Varane Has Been in Excellent Form Since Joining Manchester United

The French center-back is one of the modern game’s greatest. During his time with Real Madrid, Varane won the La Liga title thrice and the Champions League four times. He also won the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France, playing a crucial role at the heart of the Red Devils’ backline.

However, the star’s start to life at Old Trafford has not been the greatest. He joined last season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in what turned out to be a disappointing campaign, with United finishing sixth in the league. However, Varane’s individual prowess showed in games where he single-handedly kept the defense in line and opponents in check.

Since the arrival of Erik ten Hag, Varane’s incredible performances have again been praised by fans and pundits. His partnership with Lisandro Martinez has seen the Red Devils dominate games. The Frenchman has delivered an average of 3.8 clearances and one successful tackle per game this season. The World Cup winner was also instrumental in United defeating the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham.

It remains to be seen how Varane will recover from his injury and when he can return to the pitch for Manchester United.
