Manchester United told they should have signed former star
Manchester United have not made a good start to their season, losing their first game against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford. Not only was the result a worry but the performance as well, and it is safe to say that Erik ten Hag’s side deserved to lose on the day. It is pretty clear that more additions need to be made to this squad if they are to even compete for a top four spot this season.
One of the areas that it is looking like a particular worry is striker. Edinson Cavani left this summer at the end of his contract, while the future of Cristiano Ronaldo remains uncertain. Anthony Martial showed promise in pre-season but it is hard to see him being the main source of goals suddenly, after struggling for the past few years.
Rio Ferdinand has brought up an interesting name that Manchester United should have gone after this summer, and that is Danny Welbeck.
As reported by Metro, Ferdinand said on Vibe with Five:
"‘Danny Welbeck would have started today for Man United.‘Welbeck walked out of that tunnel and you could see, shoulders back, chest out, thinking: “I’m going to terrorise these two.” That’s how he played.‘He looked like prime time Danny Welbeck against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu 10 years ago, mad.‘He was a free in the summer because he didn’t have a contract. I’d have took him. On today’s performance, no doubt.’"
Ferdinand believes Manchester United should have gone for Welbeck
Welbeck did put in a very good performance against Manchester United in Brighton & Hove Albion’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford, even assisting the first goal.
But at the same time, one has to admit that if Manchester United did bring back Welbeck this summer, it would have been a very underwhelming move on the part of the Red Devils.
Yes, Welbeck was one of the most highly-rated players in England while coming through the ranks but he never fulfilled that potential. In fact, he has never scored in double digits in a Premier League season. Also, he is 31 years of age now.
Thus, it is very hard to imagine that he could have carried the goalscoring burden for Manchester United. Marko Arnautovic might actually be a better signing in comparison.
