Manchester United made the worst possible start to their Premier League campaign with a 1-2 defeat at Old Trafford against Brighton & Hove Albion. There was a lot of excitement around the team following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as manager, but now, it looks like this could be another long season for the Red Devils, if things don’t improve quickly.

One way to do that would be to bring in new signings. Till now, Manchester United have signed Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tyrell Malacia, but a lot more work is needed on this squad, if they are to have chance of challenging for silverware this time around, having finished the last five seasons without one.

One area that they have seemed to be targeting is on the wings. Antony of Ajax has been heavily linked but a move for him would be very difficult to pull off, with the Dutch giants believed to be looking for a transfer fee north of €80 million.

As a result, it would be a good idea for Manchester United to keep their eyes on alternative targets and one such player on their radar appears to be Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven.

Manchester United are trying to sign Gakpo from PSV

As tweeted out by Rudy Galetti, Manchester United are working on Gakpo and PSV would accept a €40 million transfer fee.

Gakpo had an exceptional season with PSV last time around, impressing not just in Dutch domestic competitions but also in Europe. Also, he has all the physical attributes to be a success in the Premier League.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Gakpo scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists in 47 appearances for PSV across all competitions last season.

Also, at 23 years of age, the Netherlands international has plenty of room for improvement and time to get better.
