It is pretty clear that Manchester United are looking to strengthen in the middle of the park this summer. It was already an area of need for the club and on top of that, players like Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic have left Old Trafford at the end of their respective deals. It is safe to say that the situation is far from ideal with their chase for Frenkie de Jong showing no signs of ending anytime soon either.
On paper, a reunion between Erik ten Hag and De Jong makes a lot of sense. It was under the Dutch manager at Ajax that the midfielder played the best football of his career. Also, Barcelona seem to be very open to letting him go this summer.
The suggestions have been though that De Jong is not too keen on a move to Manchester United, who do not have Champions League football to offer and have not won a trophy in five straight seasons.
As a result, the Red Devils must have eyes on alternatives as well, as midfield is an area where they need to bring in reinforcements this summer. And it looks like they have an eye on Fabian Ruiz and have made contact with the player’s entourage. As reported by The Sun, Napoli expert Ciro Venerato told CalcioNapoli24:
"“Manchester United made an attempt with Fabian’s entourage.”"
Manchester United have made contact with Ruiz’s entourage
Ruiz has been very highly rated for a long time and was even heavily linked with a move to Barcelona themselves a few years back.
But the Spanish international has stayed on at Napoli till now. That might end up changing soon though, with his current deal with the Italian club believed to run out in the summer of 2023.
Ruiz is 26 years of age and this might be the perfect time for Manchester United to make a move for him. He has all the attributes required to be a long-term fixture in the middle of the park for them.
It is believed that Napoli could be ready to let Ruiz go for a transfer fee around £26 million, which would be a bargain for a player of his quality and potential.
