Midfield is an area which has been considered as a weakness for Manchester United for years now. They were always expected to make an addition there this summer and on top of that, players like Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic have left the club, which makes it an even more urgent position of need for the club.

For the majority of the summer, Manchester United appear to have been chasing the signature of Frenkie de Jong, in an attempt to reunite him with Erik ten Hag, the manager under whom the Dutch midfield maestro played his best football.

But, it does not look like De Jong himself is convinced about the idea of a move to Old Trafford even though Barcelona seem to be open to the idea of letting him go. As a result, the Red Devils should have their eyes on other midfielders as well.

As reported by Il Messaggero (via The Sun), Manchester United are preparing a £42 million offer for Lazio’s star man, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The Italian club are expected to demand a fee closer to £59 million though.

Manchester United are preparing bid for brilliant Serie A midfielder

Sergej has been one of the best midfielders in Serie A for years now and has been linked with a move to some of the biggest clubs in Europe for quite some time as well, but for one reason or another, it has never materialised and he has stayed on at Lazio.

This summer though, Lazio seem very open to letting their star man leave. But even then, it is hard to see them letting him go for a bargain transfer fee.

Not only has Sergej been brilliant for a long time but he is also just 27 years of age, and entering his prime as a footballer. Chelsea have also been linked with the midfielder but have not made a move yet.
