Frenkie de Jong has been linked with a move to Manchester United throughout the summer, after it became clear that Erik ten Hag was going to be the new manager of the Red Devils. Till now, the club have not been able to make any breakthrough though, when it comes to reaching a deal with Barcelona over the transfer of the Dutch international.

De Jong had emerged as a breakout star at Ajax under the management of Ten Hag and was an instrumental part of their run to the Champions League semi-finals, against all odds, a few years back.

A big move to Barcelona quickly followed but things have not gone as expected since then. De Jong has not been able to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe and instead, his development has stalled quite a bit since arriving at Camp Nou.

Thus, it is not hard to see why a move to Manchester United, to play under the management of Ten Hag once again, could make sense for the Dutch midfield maestro. But it will take a huge transfer fee for that to happen.

Manchester United told Barcelona’s De Jong asking price

As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have told Manchester United that they won’t let De Jong go for a transfer fee lower than €86 million. There is still no agreement between the two sides.

De Jong could be a terrific signing for Manchester United, considering the fact that Ten Hag knows exactly how to get the best out of him.

At the same time though, a lot of risk would be involved in a move of this magnitude considering the fact that he has not been great these last few seasons and also because he has never played in the Premier League before.
