Manchester United will need to add to their squad all over the pitch. One position that needs immediate attention though is their midfield. Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are both departing the club, and the area was considered a weakness even before their exits. Thus, the need for signings there has only increased.

One player that Manchester United have been linked with heavily since the arrival of Erik ten Hag as manager is Frenkie de Jong. But he is not the only player who the club hold an interest though.

Another player that Manchester United have been linked with, and for months in his case, is Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United. The midfielder has been spectacular in recent seasons, establishing himself in the England national team as well. A move to Old Trafford does not appear to be on the cards, but one to the city is very possible.

As reported by Football Insider, Phillips has told Leeds United that he wants to quit the club and join Manchester City this summer.

Phillips prefers move to Manchester United’s crosstown rivals

Phillips has spent his entire career at Leeds United and that is believed to be the reason why he does not want to move to Manchester United, who are considered as rivals to the Peacocks.

On the other hand, it cannot be denied either that Manchester City is a much more attractive option for players these days. Not only do they have a much better chance of winning silverware, but get to play under the management of Pep Guardiola as well.

Overall, it does not look like a move to Manchester United will happen for Phillips unless something bizarrely unexpected happens over the coming weeks and months. Of course, this could be a double blow for the Red Devils, not only losing out on the player but to their crosstown rivals as well.
