Manchester United will be hoping that Erik ten Hag’s arrival as manager ushers in an era of change at Old Trafford. Change is exactly what this club needs right now, after having underperformed ever since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013. They have not even won a single trophy over the past five seasons.

One area that has somehow still remained a worry for Manchester United is defence, despite the club bringing in someone with the quality and pedigree of Raphael Varane last summer.

The French World Cup winner has appeared to struggle to match the high expectations set for him at the start of the season, with many claiming he was going to transform the club back into title contenders. That clearly has not happened and since the arrival of Varane, several defenders around him appear to have taken a step or two back as well.

Thus, it would not be much of a surprise if the club decided to pursue the signature of another centre-back in the summer. And one player that they have been heavily linked with in recent times is Ajax’s Jurrien Timber. He is someone that Ten Hag will know very well from their together at Ajax.

As reported by The Guardian, Manchester United are in contact with Ajax over Jurrien Timber, with Ten Hag wanting to make the defender one of his first signings with the Red Devils. The discussions are believed to be at an early stage though.

Timber might be just 20 years of age, but he has already established himself as a regular starter for Ajax.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he made 43 appearances last season. Those are amazing stats for a player so young and the sky looks like limit for the Ajax star.
