When Manchester United signed Raphael Varane from Real Madrid last summer, many had felt that it was the move that would transform their defence into one of the best in Europe and turn them into Premier League contenders. Following another trophyless season and a failure to finish in the top four, it is safe to say that things did not turn out quite as expected.

Varane himself has disappointed, with the multi-time Champions League winner and French World Cup winner not playing anywhere near his best. On the other hand, those around him at the back line have not been good either.

Thus, defence has remained a weakness for Manchester United and one would expect them to strengthen at the back this summer again, with Erik ten Hag set to take over as the permanent manager.

There appears to be an interesting development regarding this as well. As reported by Football Insider, Manchester United are exploring a move for Sven Botman. That means that the Red Devils could potentially hijack AC Milan’s move for the Lille centre-back, with the Italian giants believed to be in advanced talks over a £25 million transfer.

Botman has been a standout performer for Lille since arriving at the club. He played a key role in their Ligue 1 triumph last season and has impressed for them in Europe as well.

Still just 22 years of age, one would expect him to get much better as he gains more experience and as a result, it is not hard to see why so many top clubs in Europe appear to have an interest in his signature.

If Manchester United are able to sign him, he could prove to be an excellent addition to Ten Hag’s side. It will not be easy though as AC Milan appear to be leading the race at the moment while Newcastle United have also been linked with Botman for a long time now.
