With Erik ten Hag arriving as the Manchester United manager next summer, it is time for a transformation of the squad at Old Trafford. They have had big name players for a long time but it has not yielded results on the pitch, at least on a consistent basis. As things stand, the club are headed towards their fifth straight trophyless season, something that would have been unthinkable not too long ago.

That is the reality of the situation at Manchester United now though and it is clear that change is needed not just on the managerial hot seat but on the pitch as well.

They have already been handed a transfer blow though as their contract offer for Antonio Rudiger, which is believed to have been the best one, has been rejected as it looks like the player does not want to play for another club in England after Chelsea and is closing in on a move to Real Madrid instead.

Patrick Berger tweeted out regarding the Rudiger situation and Manchester United’s failed offer:

Manchester United turned down by Rudiger, who is closing in on Real Madrid move

Defence is an area that Manchester United need to improve in. Despite signing Raphael Varane last summer, there has not been any real progress at the back for the Red Devils, as they have continued to struggle to keep the ball out of the back of their own net, no matter what combination they go with.

Rudiger has been one of the best defenders in the world since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel as the Chelsea manager and as a result, it is safe to say that if Manchester United would have been able to sign him, it would have been considered as a major coup on the part of the club.

It looks like that is not on the cards though and instead, he will be heading to Real Madrid as a free agent, after failing to agree a new deal with Chelsea.
