Despite their underwhelming performances, it is safe to say that Manchester United have one of the best squads in world football with multiple big-name options available in almost every position on the pitch. Thus, it is no surprise that there are several players who have not gotten a lot of playing time this season, and could be looking towards the Old Trafford exit door.

One such player is Jesse Lingard. He had enjoyed a tremendous half-a-season loan spell at West Ham United in the previous campaign. During that period of time, he was one of the most in-form players in the Premier League.

Thus, many expected him to play a big part for Manchester United this season but that has not happened at all. Instead, he has barely featured. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has played just 366 minutes of football in the 2021/22 campaign.

And as tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Lingard is expected to leave Manchester United as a free agent in June.

Lingard expected to leave Manchester United as a free agent

Lingard’s current deal with Manchester United runs out at the end of this season, and at the moment, there does not seem to be much hope of him extending his contract at Old Trafford.

In fact, he was heavily linked with a loan move to Newcastle United in January itself but that did not end up transpiring

If he does indeed leave at the end of this season as a free agent, there is not expected to be any lack of interest in the English international’s signature. The likes of Newcastle United, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur have all been linked with a potential move for Lingard.

While it is hard not to feel that Lingard could have done more at Manchester United, at this point of time, it might be the best thing for both the club and the player, to part ways.
