Manchester United were linked with a possible move for Niklas Sule on a free transfer but the Bayern Munich star is set to join Borussia Dortmund when his current deal runs out. This was a potential blow for the Red Devils. Despite signing Raphael Varane last summer, their defence has failed to impress and it is safe to say that they could do with another centre-back in the future.

On top of their inconsistencies in defence, Manchester United could end up losing two of their senior centre-backs next summer. Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have both been linked with moves away from Old Trafford, as they look nowhere near the top of the pecking order right now.

Vulnerabilities at the back, coupled with questions over the futures of the Bailly and Jones, mean that centre-back is a position that might need strengthening at Old Trafford next summer.

And as tweeted out by journalist Patrick Berger, Manchester United are keen on signing Borussia Dortmund star Manuel Akanji in the summer, and it appears that the defender has rejected an offer to extend his contract with the Bundesliga side recently. He is rated at around €30 million.

Manchester United signed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund last summer and have also been linked with their star striker Erling Haaland for a long time. Now, could a potential move for Akanji be on as well?

The 26-year-old Switzerland international has been linked with clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona over the years. Akanji has looked reliable at the back for both club and country over the years.

His current deal with Borussia Dortmund is believed to be running out in the summer of 2023. Thus, could a potential move to Manchester United be on the cards this summer? Let’s see what the future holds.
